Description
I believe this is a very old tea trivet from an English potterycompany. I've dated the registration to November 26, 1877, based on
the diamond shaped mark. I believe it to be a tea trivet because of
the footed ring and bulk of the plate. It's not the weight of a normal
cake plate. This is just speculation on my part, however; if anyone
has more information, please let me know. Trivet is one-color transfer
design of Charles Dickens' famous characters "Mr. Pickwick and Mrs.
Bardell" from "The Pickwick Papers," Dickens' first novel. It's a
brownish color on white.
The back of the trivet has the English diamond shape mark with
different numbers and letters indicating the date (according to
websites on how to date pottery.) The words "Summer Time" are above
the registration mark. I can't be sure if this is a company name or
something else because I can't find anything similar anywhere on the
web. (Again, anyone with information, please let me know.) It measures
about 6 3/4" wide. In any case, based on research I believe this is a
pretty rare piece. There is some staining which comes with age but no
chips or cracks. Very interesting piece of English pottery!
